The Story of Clifford - Hawaii's Only RV Wrap!

An Awesome Story from 808Wraps

Today’s post is about a pretty incredible project 808Wraps completed back in June, 2020. However, this vehicle was not just any vehicle. It was a massive RV, likely the only RV on the island that has been completely wrapped! That’s right, the wrapped RV you see driving around Oahu is none other than Joe Akana’s RV, or, as we like to call it, “Clifford the Big Red Bus”.

There are some exciting details to the story we wanted to share with you today!

It all started several months back, when 808Wraps Owner, Founder, and Lead Graphic Designer Jon Launer received a call from Carlos. Jon and Carlos were mutual friends through their business network group, BNI. Carlos just so happened to be working on Joe Akana’s campaign, and Joe just so happened to have a friend who had shipped an RV all the way to Oahu.

How it All Began

They were wondering if Jon could wrap the windows, as they planned on making the RV into a kind of mobile headquarters. Plus, they were looking for additional signage, like yard signs and banners.

Well, as you know, windows of an RV are pretty small compared to the rest of the vehicle! After a bit of collaboration between Joe Akana’s team and Jon’s lead Sales Representative Bryan, they realized it was better to go big…really big. After all, an RV isn’t something you see driving down the H3 very often. And a fully wrapped RV? It would certainly turn heads!

Wait until you hear how long this project took. Can you guess?

Record-Breaking Turnover Time

Six days! From concept to installation. Because when Carlos called Jon he told him Joe Akana had a launch party scheduled 7 days out from the day he called, and Jon was actually off-island!

A job of this size normally takes 3-4 weeks, but that didn’t stop Jon and his awesome team from making this wrap happen ASAP.

Virtual Possibilities

The mindset shift towards Zoom in March 2020 had already set the foundation for speedy video collaboration. Jon jumped on a Zoom call with Joe’s team, and within an hour came up with a pricing plan (the wrap is removable, and will be taken off within a year). The following day, he collaborated with his team and Joe’s team on design, revisions, and final approval in under 3 hours!

Fun Fact: the original photo was of Joe holding sunglasses, but Jon used his graphic design magic to turn those sunglasses into a beautiful plumeria lei!

Once the digital files were approved, Jon sent them to his print production team, who were able to print the graphics within 2 days and get them sent to the installers. Jon’s installation and production team worked tirelessly to get the RV wrapped in 2 days, working practically 24 hours straight, as Jon had brought in 4 installers to complete the wrap within the time crunch.

And, amazingly, thanks to the collaboration, persistence, ingenuity, and diligence of everyone involved, Clifford the Big Red Bus was ready 24 hours before his big reveal.

This project really was one for the record books!

Custom Paint Job or Vinyl Vehicle Wrap: Which Is More Cost-Effective?

People often turn to us when they're looking for a quick and easy way to restyle or rehab their ride. We get it and, frankly, that's what we're here for but there are some times when car wraps just won't work. In today's post we'll go over some issues that can't be corrected with vinyl wraps and those parts of your car or truck that you're better off not trying to wrap.

When Wraps Won't Work

Most cast vinyl used for vehicle wraps will only adhere well to paint that is in original (OEM) or like new or very good quality condition. Even if the problem area is small, installing a wrap over the damaged paint has the potential of creating more problems. In fact, most colors and finishes of wrap material will amplify the problem area. Since the vinyl is an extremely thin film, it just doesn’t hide flaws. Even if the vinyl will adhere to (or around) the problem area, the removal of the vinyl may cause the damaged and/or surrounding paint to pull off. Remember, vinyl wraps don’t last forever, and they need to be removed at some point. Taking the vinyl off and bringing the paint with it is not good. Ever. If you are looking at your vehicle, wondering if a wrap is the right choice for you, here are images of some paint conditions that just won’t work.

Deep Paint Scratches

Scratches, chips and other defects in the paint will be magnified when the vinyl is installed. What's worse, removal of the vinyl also may cause the paint surrounding the damaged area to pull off. The only vinyl wrap film we can recommend to hide this damage is Rwraps™ 3D Carbon Fiber or Series 1080 Carbon Fiber films.

Aftermarket Paint Jobs with Orange Peel Textures

Bad paint jobs with excess paint can cause an ‘orange peel’ effect that will not be hidden by a vinyl wrap. We recommend professional paint repair and proper cure time before a wrap should be applied to a vehicle. Even then, we cannot guarantee the condition of the paint once the wrap is removed. Still, if you're a brave soul then films like Brushed Metallic, Camouflage, Carbon Fibers may hide the orange peel texture upon which they are applied.

Cars with Rusted Sheet Metal

Wraps won't stick to rust. We wish there was something else we could say but if your car or truck has exposed rust or oxidation the bubble-free adhesives simply will not bond. In essence, a rusty surface is no different than a dirty one and the rust particles will adhere to the film resulting in delamination.

Vehicles with Peeling Clear Coat

Some people will tell you that a car wrap is not an option if the clear coat or paint is peeling. In general, it's recommended to install wraps only on factory painted vehicles for wrapping. However, if you do decide that a wrap is the only option that's going to work for you we strongly recommend having areas of paint that are chipping or peeling “feathered” or “sanded” by a body shop prior to wrapping to insure a smooth installation and prevent any future paint flaking. If you have a car with flaking paint or peeling clear coat we don't recommend Gloss, Flip or Chameleon films for these types of jobs although Carbon Fiber, Camouflage and Sticker Bomb films completely disguise any peeling below.

5 Rules to Make Your Vehicle Wrap Last as Long as Possible

Knowing what you’re getting in to before you buy can help make the decision even easier. We know you want to take care of your investment in the best way possible, and keep it looking great for the lifetime of your vinyl. 808Wraps also offers ceramic coating services which will allow for cleaning less often, make cleaning easier, and increase the longevity of your wrap. Here are some tips and tricks to make your vehicle wrap last as long as possible:

1. Hand wash your vehicle.

Now before you get all bent out of shape about the length of time it will take to keep things in tip-top shape, think about how great a spotless vehicle looks. Your car is your brand ambassador, and the vinyl is its uniform. No one wants a stained or faded fleet. Suck it up, grab some mild detergent, and hand wash your vehicle with a nice soft sponge or rag.

What’s so bad about a carwash? Strong jets can cause the vinyl to lift at the seams. Brushes and bristles can scratch your vinyl. And colors can start to fade and dull with repeated exposure to harsh chemicals and abrasives. None of these things will help your vehicle wrap last, so avoid them at all cost.

2. Wash your vehicle wrap often.

Yes, we know we just told you that your vehicle should be hand-washed. And now we’re telling you to wash it often. If you’re in traffic a lot, consider washing your vehicle every 1-2 weeks. Trust us, you’ll get used to a beautiful, clean vehicle pretty quickly and you won’t want to wait a month to wash it.

3. Remove stains, insects, gasoline, and sap as soon as possible.

Life happens. We’ve all run into a swarm of insects that covers the front of our cars at some point or another. Or we’ve parked under a tree only to find our car with a few fresh droppings. Or worse, sap. Vinyl is made to withstand all these things but removing them sooner rather than later is a must to prolong the life of your vinyl. And we want to make your vehicle wrap last as long as possible, so here’s what to do.

Soak the affected area with warm, soapy water and gently rub it with a microfiber. For those extra stubborn spots, try some denatured alcohol, Simple Green, or Meguiar’s Gold Class™ Bug and Tar Remover. Avoid any solvents or oil-based products, as these can damage your vinyl. As with any substance on your car, be sure to rinse it thoroughly when you’re done.

4. When it comes to weather, pretend your vinyl is a factory paint job.

Will your vehicle vinyl fade or peel after a year in the sun? Definitely not, just like a factory paint job won’t fade or peel. But are pollutants and UV rays real? For sure. When you drive, your vehicle picks up everyday pollutants from rain, smog, road debris and other vehicles on the road. These pollutants become more harmful when baked in the sun for extended periods of time. They won’t make your vehicle wrap last. (The same is true for any vehicle paint job. Vinyl is just a bit more delicate than vehicle paint.)

5. Don’t wax your vinyl-wrapped vehicle.

Yes, we that realize to some of you this seems obvious. But to others it is not. Wax does help protect a vehicle against wear and tear, but it will degrade your vinyl and shorten the life of your wrap. Don’t wax it. Don’t polish it. Don’t add anything to the top of it other than a gentle soap and a soft microfiber or sponge.

Following these simple rules will keep your vehicle vinyl in great shape for years to come.

So as a result this has flooded the market with individuals and companies that are eager to supply the overwhelming demand for this service. Local sign shops, copy shops, and other commercial printers have added this to their offerings during this time of growth.

However, buyer beware because car, vehicle, and fleet wraps are not like postcards, calendars or copies where the machine does the majority of the work and you just send the file that the client send to the printer and don't worry about anything else. Effective and long lasting vehicle and car wraps require specific training, years of practice, knowledge and mastery of many different fields in order to successfully create an effective car wrap that will stand the test of time and deliver the results to the buyer.

Lets take a deeper dive into the areas that 808Wraps specifically focuses on in order to deliver the best and most comprehensive vehicle wrap solution in the state of Hawaii.

1. Design

When designing a typical business card, flyer, or postcard the user normally goes online to a “gang-run” style printer like VistaPrint or the many others and chooses one of 10,000 templates that other people have used, add their logo, contact information and they are done. They have designed their own business card . . .

However there are no boilermaker templates for vehicle wraps. Each one should be custom to the users requirements in order to meet their expectations. A great design will exceed all of the users wildest dreams. The wrong design will be their worst nightmare and a waste of their time and money.

The designer must be highly experienced and utilize the right tools by using the best vehicle wrap templates available in order to create a car wrap design that will fit a specific vehicle exactly. This is a crucial first step so that the proofs match the finished product exactly with no surprises in regards to alignment or placement of the content of the design onto the body of the vehicle.

Every angle, space, curve of the vehicle must be taken into consideration when designing a wrap. Ignoring these elements will result in a car wrap design that is not easy on the eyes nor is easy to read and understand. It will also have a negative effect on your company image.

2. Material

There are many high and low quality vinyl manufacturers out there. Top brand names that have been around for years and offer the best car wrap vinyl include: 3M, Avery, Oracal and Arlon.

If you care about quality and longevity of the wrap then you want to make sure that a high quality vinyl is being used. You also need to keep in mind that simply stating that a 3M vinyl is being used it doesn't mean that particular vinyl is the right choice for your project. 3M and all other manufactures offer many different types of vinyl from high-quality, high-cost Cast Vinyl to lower performance, cheaper Calendared Vinyl.

The combination of the vinyl and the over-laminate is also extremely important. More often than not shops will use a 3M Cast vinyl but will use a Calendared or cheaper Laminate to reduce the cost. Cast laminates are about three times the cost of calendared. Even a trained eye can not tell the difference between the two at first but as time passes the calendared laminate will start to fade much faster than a cast. Also a calendared laminate is not designed to be used on vehicle curves and it will bubble and pop out of its position within the first few months.

So as you can see materials play a very important role in a vehicle wrap, you can have the best design and the best installer but with the wrong material your wrap won't last. 808Wraps uses only Avery MPI 1005 EZRS cast vinyl with matching over-laminate in ALL of its vehicle wrap projects.

3. Production

Let's say you have the perfect design and are using the best suited vinyl or materials for the job. Now is time to print your design on the vinyl. Using a wide format digital printer is not as simple as using a desktop or office printer that we all use at home or office. There is a lot more knowledge required by the designer and production person when printing a vehicle wrap

Each manufacturer's vinyl has its own unique print profile. The printer software must be setup properly to recognize all the different medias that a print shop may use in the production of their wide format printed materials. What is a print profile you might ask? Simply put it's a code specifically created for that particular vinyl which tells the printer exactly how much ink to lay on the vinyl in order to get the best results.

Many print shops don't bother with this step and tend to use one profile for all media. This results in dull, over or under saturated images that just don't look right. 808Wraps has been in the printing industry for 20+years and has all the knowledge and experience to make sure the colors come out exactly as show during the proof and design process.

4. Preparation

Let's take this a step further, you have the perfect car wrap design, the best material and a great print. Now it's time to get your vehicle readied for the installation.

The most time consuming part of wrapping a vehicle is the prep process. This is where the installer has to go over every inch of your car's surface as well as under the weather trims, cracks, fenders to make sure they're 100% clean & wax free.

The car must be washed the day before & has to be dry. A special solution is used to wipe the car down completely to make sure any wax residue has been removed. Then again, using alcohol the car has to be wiped down to make sure the solution that was used to remove the wax has been removed otherwise it will affect the adhesive of the vinyl.

The smallest dirt left behind could result in the vinyl's adhesive to fail and after a short time, lift off the surface. A small lift will allow water to get under the wrap and eventually cause the entire wrap to fail.

Since this is the most time consuming part of the wrap it is also the least favorite part of the job for an installer and therefore most overlooked.

The detailer has extensive experience in preparing the body of vehicles for wrap installation. They focus on de-waxing the surface of a vehicle. Removing any substances that have been used in the past cleaning process that may contain ammonia, bleach or other adhesive removers. They remove any tar and thoroughly inspect the body of the vehicle again for any dents, rust, or other issues that could affect the quality of the install.

This way the vehicle comes fully prepped on the day of the install. Then the installers will give it a final cleaning in preparation to make the surface cherry and fully primed to receive its new skin!

5. Install Facility

Look how far we have come, you have your perfect design, the perfect material, a great print and your vehicle has been perfectly prepped... now you need a Car Wrap Facility.

The question now is where will the actual installation take place? Indoor or Outdoors? Will the indoor facility be dust free and have the right temperature required by the vinyl manufacturer during installation?

If your wrap is being installed outdoor, well then you're off to a terrible start. There is absolutely no way to avoid large and small dust particles away from the surface of your car. The results can be noticed right away because even the smallest dust particle will show through the wrap and having thousands of them under your wrap will look like a layer of sand was put down before the wrapping of the car. This not only looks terrible but large enough particles could cause holes and rips in the wrap and allow water to leak behind the vinyl causing the wrap to fail.

If your vehicle is being wrapped indoors, well that's great, but the indoor facility must be super clean with some type of dust control and it must be at the right temperature. Installing a wrap at a high temperatures will cause it to over stretch and fail over the long-term.

So a dedicated installation facility is extremely important to make sure the final outcome of the wrap is superb.

6. Installation

This is the last but not the least important step of a car wrap. You have your perfect design, great material, superb print quality, your vehicle has been prepped perfectly and the facility is specifically designed for vehicle wraps.

All of these factors could be totally destroyed if an un-experienced and unmotivated installer does the wrap.

Everyone seems to think that is easy to install a wrap, after all it is simply a giant sticker right? ... Wrong!

It takes countless hours and a lot of wasted material and money to learn the proper way to install a wrap. 808Wraps installers are 3M Certified. It is like the Harvard Law School for our industry. You do not simply get the certification because you paid for the course. You have to demonstrate a solid understanding of wrap techniques and have the experience as well to pass. The certification process is over 10 days long with a grueling class schedule, and not all experienced installers pass on their first or even second time through the course.

Different materials behave differently and therefore the installer must have extensive experience with various media. Many installers develop their own tools for doing the job, and some even get patented and adopted by other professionals in the industry.

Although the actual installation of the wrap is very difficult, the final trimming of the wrap is even more challenging. You can have the perfectly installed wrap but if the excess material is not trimmed and tucked properly the final outcome will look terrible. Trimming the wrap requires a steady hand, a lot of patience, experience and technique. This is what sets an excellent installer apart from a good installer. Making the wrap to look like a paint job is what it's all about.

7. Post Installation

Now you might think well we're done, the wrap has been installed and trimmed perfectly, I am ready to enjoy my car... again wrong.

This is the step that is most overlooked by installers because it is the most time consuming and most boring part of the install.

The installer, now using a Heat-Gun (not a torch), must go over the areas of the wrap that is on a recessed or curved area, using a digital thermometer to ensure every inch of these areas reaches a certain degree as required by the manufacturer. (Solid color wrap needs to reach a 45 to 50 degrees Celsius and printed media must reach 85 to 90 degrees Celsius).

NOW we are done, well almost done... let's say all the above factors were met and performed perfectly, what happens if you still have issues with your wrap?
